BEFORE YOU ARRIVE

Life on Mayne runs on island time and shared community values. From conserving our freshwater to respecting local fire rules, a little preparation goes a long way toward making your stay safe, seamless, and memorable.

WATER CONSERVATION

On Mayne Island, every drop counts! Our community draws water strictly from local groundwater reserves and rain collection. Help us preserve our supply by being mindful of household water use, limiting shower times, and following any seasonal outdoor watering restrictions during your visit.

FIRE SAFETY

Forest fires pose a serious threat to our island ecosystem during dry months. Summer campfire bans and outdoor burning restrictions are strictly enforced across Mayne. Please pay close attention to roadside fire hazard rating signs, respect local fire department restrictions, refrain from open flames, and never toss anything out of a vehicle window. Be sure to check active prohibitions before your stay.

OCEAN SAFETY

Surrounding waters on Mayne are stunning, but coastal currents and weather conditions can change quickly. Always wear a lifejacket or PFD when paddling or boating, check local tide charts before heading out, and stay mindful of cold water risks even on hot summer days. Be sure to respect marine wildlife and keep a safe distance from whales and seal colonies.

BY PRIVATE BOAT

Cruising into Mayne Island by private boat is a fantastic way to arrive. Transient moorage is available at public docks like Miners Bay Wharf and Anson Road Dock in Horton Bay. Because dock space is limited and operates on a first-come, first-served basis for visitors, anchoring in protected bays like Horton Bay is a popular alternative. Always check local tide charts and harbor regulations before tying up.

ESSENTIAL ISLAND TIPS

Local Hours & Island Time

Life on Mayne Island operates at a wonderfully relaxed pace, which also means local schedules can be flexible. Many shops, cafes, and restaurants run on reduced or seasonal hours, closing earlier than urban venues or opening on select days of the week. To avoid missing out, call businesses directly or check local community social media pages for up-to-date operating times. Embracing this slower rhythm is all part of the authentic island experience!

Garbage & Recycling

Help keep our island clean by packing out what you bring. Local recycling is available at the Mayne Island Recycling Depot every Wednesday and Saturday between 10 AM and 2 PM. (Also open Friday during summer months.) Curbside garbage collection runs on Mondays. Buy required bag stickers at Active Pass Gas, and always secure your trash inside a covered bin to protect it from curious ravens.

Wildlife & Pet Etiquette

Sharing Mayne Island with local wildlife requires extra care. Please keep pets leashed at all times on public trails, beaches, and park areas to protect fragile habitats and ground-nesting birds. Always observe wild animals from a respectful distance, store food securely, and never feed wildlife under any circumstances. If your pet needs care while you are here, local veterinary services are available through the Mayne Island Veterinary Clinic.

Public Washrooms

Restrooms on the island are as essential as in the city! Public washrooms are available at Village Bay Ferry Terminal, Dinner Bay Park, Georgina Point Heritage Park, and in Miners Bay at the Park & Library complex. You’ll also find rustic outhouses tucked away around the island at popular trailheads and beach accesses. To make sure you're never caught off guard, we've marked all washroom and outhouse locations right on our interactive island map.

Road Safety

  • Pedestrians & Runners: Walk/run facing oncoming traffic (on the left side of the road) and keep your ears open and eyes up on blind turns.

  • Cyclists: Ride with traffic (on the right side of the road), stick strictly to single file, and use lights/reflectors.

  • Drivers: Drive cautiously. There are zero streetlights on Mayne, and with an abundance of local deer roaming everywhere, animals or pedestrians can appear around narrow curves instantly.
